He was raised in a Christian family from Ogwugwu village in Enugwu-Agidi town of Anambra State, Nigeria. He completed his secondary education at F.G.C. Kwali, Abuja, in 1991, and later earned a diploma in Banking and Finance along with a BSc in Philosophy from the University of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria.

Jim Iyke's parents are Mr. Stephen Esomugha and Mrs. Ngozi Esomugha. The family name was formally Okolue before Esomugha. He is the only boy among eight children.
